About us

Shiremoor Dental Practice is a family-oriented practice founded by Jane Ainsworth in 1995, during which patients have received high quality care focusing on prevention. The practice is now owned by Samantha Carew and Melbourne Carew, who have worked closely with Jane before her retirement to ensure patients still receive a high level of care. The practice is independent for adults and has a NHS contract to treat children only.

Our staff are all fully qualified and attend courses to keep up-to-date with the constant changes in modern dentistry and health and safety requirements. They are fully registered with the GDC.

Melbourne qualified from Newcastle University in 2005, since qualifying he has worked in general practice in Middlesbrough where he has built up a loyal following of patients, that led to him being finalist for Best Young Dentist for the North East region two years running. He has shown his commitment to providing quality care by first completing a postgraduate diploma in general dental practice and becoming a member of the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners.

Melbourne, along with Samantha, are committed to providing quality care in a relaxed atmosphere and maintaining the ethos of the practice they are now part of. Melbourne's commitment to the quality care of his patients was highlighted by his completion of a Diploma in Restorative Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons, which took 2 years that allows him to provide a greater variety of treatment, meeting all the needs of his patients.

Samantha Carew Dental Therapist GDC number 109937

Samantha has worked in dentistry for over 11 years, starting her career as a dental nurse in Hartlepool. She was then promoted to a role in the management of the practice and training new nursing staff. Samantha completed a diploma in dental hygiene and therapy at Newcastle University, and has since completed several advanced courses enhancing her clinical abilities. Samantha enjoys all aspects of dental hygiene and therapy, especially restorative work (fillings). She is very passionate about a preventative approach to dentistry, and is extremely committed to helping patients achieve a healthy mouth in a caring and relaxed environment.

Samantha recently joined the practice as a partner and is committed to continuing Jane’s hard work in promoting and providing high quality dental care.

Jane Ainsworth BDS - Dental Surgeon (GDC registration 46390)

Jane qualified at Manchester University in 1972. She worked as a house officer at Manchester Dental Hospital and in general practice, before moving to Hong Kong in 1974. While in Hong Kong, she worked in government clinics and private practice for several years, before having a break from practice while her three children were small. Jane and Ian and the children moved to Northumberland in 1987 and in 1989 she returned to dentistry, working in Wallsend as an associate dentist with Messrs Dunlevy and Dixon, before opening her own practice in Shiremoor. Jane has recently retired from general dental practice..

Catherine Collins - Practice Manager (GDC registration 131570)

Catherine has been with the practice since 1997, working firstly as a qualified dental nurse and later as receptionist and practice manager. Since joining the practice she has gained her certificate in Oral Health Education, and undertaken courses in sedation for dental nurses and mentoring. She also holds the Professional Diploma in Dental Practice Management.

Lucy Davies - Dental Therapist (GDC registration 105559)

Lucy has worked in dentistry since 1997, starting her career as a dental nurse in Newcastle. In 2008 she achieved distinction in the Diploma in Dental Hygiene and Therapy from Newcastle University, so that she is qualified to carry out both hygiene work and provide fillings for both children and adults to the prescription of a dentist. Lucy joined us in January 2010 and has settled in well in her role in the practice. She is committed to helping patients achieve healthy mouths and enjoys helping patients to feel more confident that they can improve their own health.

Claire Innes - Dental Nurse (GDC registration 126931)

Claire has worked as a dental nurse since 2003 and qualified in 2005. She works mainly with Jane in the surgery and also on reception. She is interested in all aspects of her work and has undertaken further training to enable her to assist with the treatment of patients with intravenous sedation.

 

She enjoys working as part of our small friendly team and is interested in taking further courses in oral health education and radiography.

Michelle Bone Dental Nurse (GDC registration number 192675)

Michelle has worked as a dental nurse since 2007 and qualified in January 2010. She joined the practice in June 2010 and has settled well with both patients and the rest of the team. Michelle enjoys working at the practice and is keen to develop her career.
